Nursery Admissions – Government issues 100 point scale

Finally tiny tots can breathe a sigh of relief. No longer is it required that they have to undergo the gruesome pressure of interviews or discussions to gain admission to schools. The government seems to have issued a great point programme and its now in open . Lets see the response from every parent on the same. The major advantage would be that deserving children will gain a lot from the process. The fall side will be if we as parents are more focussed to put our ward in a particular school then unless we are close or in proximity of the place it will help. Lets see what more the govenment has to say on this issue. wait and watch for more details!

Usability matters in IT a lot – UPA hyderabad inauguration.

This noon i was at hyderabad responding to the invitation of Sameer Chavan, President of UPA Hyderabad on the eve of their hyderabad chapter inauguration. The event was an awesome effort and a tremendous initiative for combining usability professionals of diverse areas to look forward to some interesting times ahead. My first tryst with the concept of usability goes way back to 2001 when i was part of developing a portal named http://www.al-muthahidoon.com. This portal was focussed on imparting relegious teachings of islam to a community of south indian muslims and also an effort to simplify and impart the custom rites to be carried out by every muslim while performing Haj. Thats when we had to focus on usability and related issues for the first time.Later i had the opportunity to be part of product development team on an ERP solution AMSYS on Property Management, then Squadron One (Fleet management Product) and then came SMICA an RFID – Barcoding enabled inventory management system. All this time some time or other usability had been one of the key aspects we have been looking at. Since 2006 and launch of our online fashion portal (www.fashioniq.com) usability had become one of our key issues and this conference was very reinforcing for me on a very personal level.

Eric Schaffe and his associate have been great in providing some interesting insights into usability and its importance and relevance to the current IT scenaria. There was an interesting debate that we had with Eric on the emergence of Web 2.0 and the sudden emerging technology of Ajax and how it makes webyfying easier.Actually to look at that aspect at the outset ajax and similar technologies seems to give more flexibilty to developers at the same time it also gives ample room for developers to mess up usability. Very true the impending risk does exist !

Eric’s associate was providing an interesting speech on how cultural differences and geographical bandwidth provide a huge opportunity for Usability experts to play a more active role in day to day product / web development. After her speech i started my short speech on the efforts of The Knowledge Foundation and announcing PROTO to the crowd By request of Sameer we also outlined our recent success of Blog Camp to encourage similar activities at hyderabad too.

This also provided an excellent opportunity to network with Kaladhar Bapu of UMO (Usability Matters Org.), Usha and Ashish Tiwari who are very interested to network with TKF for their forthcoming meeting on World usability Day. There are some design competitions announced too about which i will be posting soon. Finally i had some interesting notes sharing with Muthukumar of Kanbay, Prakash Khot  / Saurav Mishra CTO of DIM DIM (a start up) and Krishna Raj of E-Delve (again a start up). We can expect all these friends at Proto soon.

At the outset Great Start for Sameer and team and TKF would be proud to associate with another similar team with a passion to share knowledge . Photos of this event are uploaded at Flicker with tags "upa" "hyderabad" "tkf" "syed" Good night folks.

Sam Pitroda in sync with The Knowledge Foundation initiatives

Today one of our buddies (Babloo) happened to get an opportunity to brief Sam Pitroda, an inventor, entrepreneur and policymaker. He is the founder of C-DOT and one of the Tech minds of the Rajiv Gandhi regime and waw instrumental for all these yellow PCO boxes that have spread across india making telecom so widespread. He is also the CEO of World Tel Limited. Currently chairman of India’s National Knowledge Commission, we got some quality time to brief him on the efforts of The Knowledge Foundations and its initatives in relation to PROTO towards bridging the entrepruner with the moneyman (Venture capitalists) and N-Logue project towards bridging digital divide. He has accepted to support us in all aspects possible. This will set the entire platfor of the foundation in a different plane altogether in terms of credibility at the national level. And tomorrow i will be showcasing the Foundation’s efforts and initiatives towards society that we are currently doing at the UPA Hyderabad Launch. For today Thanx Babloo !

PROTO eans meet today for the first time !

These are the minutes of the Meeting. Among the attendees were Kiruba, Sukumar, Rajesh, Aswin, Narain, Ganesh, Syed, Vicky. On the best practices of writing on Napkins, we managed to keep track of the discussions.

Date:
December is too short of  a notice and we talked about it. First week of January would be too close to the holiday season and not enough time for the people to have recovered from the festivities. Second week is the long weekend for pongal here in South India, so the dates are set at the third week of January on the 20th and 21st

Venue:
We are going to look into IIT. There are some very good conference halls for this nature and might suit it well. Also the name of IIT would help us leverage and give us a better credibility for an event as such.

Cost Estimation:
Has to be done.

Pricing:
We are going to charge people for entry. For entrepreneurs the price is 5000 Rs. For the VCs, its going to be 10,000 Rs. We are very well aware that the VCs and Entrepreneurs are the heroes of the show, but unless there is a registration and some cost attached to it, we will never know who is going to show up, till the moment that the actually do. There will be Rs. 200 door fee for the rest of the attendees, so that we can have some count on the people attending. In short, a registration means some viable head count and manageability.

Selection Criteria: There will be 30 companies presenting in 10 minute slots. That will be the final list. Three questions will have to be answered: Who are they? What are they doing? And what funding can help them achieve. There will be stalls for all the 30 companies around the place, so that after the demonstration, interested parties can be in touch with them.

The best news we can deliver to the VCs is the quality of the selection process. There will be no compromise on that front, for any matter.

Sponsors:
we will have to start the activity at the earliest. Syed is meeting with TIE tomorrow. We will be a little careful on what companies we approach for sponsors. I think we should also avoid cluttering the stage with too many names, as it would be confusing to focus on the company being presented.

Journalists: All are welcome, in my opinion. But we need to get in touch with the best and get them to focus on the event, and sell the idea of what this event is about, rather than "just another story" to fill the space.

Team allocation: There should be a gradual process as to teams slowly falling in place. I think it will help in a lot of ways. There are people in the group who are inactive. I highly urge them to get involved and be a part of this, as you could kinda feel left out otherwise. One the teams are in place, there will be some discretion on some issues, and wont be discussed openly. Things such as the names of the 30 companies, will not be released to the public or the VCs before the morning of the event.

Technorati and Del.ici.ous Tags: Please tag your posts, all of them using "Proto" and "Proto.in". Good thing about tags is that they are free. We could settle with just Proto, but that is also a widely used tag for prototype related posts, and Proto.in has a small issue with Technorati, cause of the "dot" and it takes an extra step to search for it, with the "tags" option. Let’s use them both. Delicious shouldnt have a problem with both.

There will be a business networking session after the event.

There will be a team that will create a checklist of things to watch out for, before the demo – such as making sure they have offline data, and can work without the internet (in case o f problems) and such. and… we are going to look into rear projection methods for the stage. It will be a huge backdrop (like the one used in Steve Job’s keynote speeches), so that there is enough clarity and focus on what is being presented and no way to easily ignore it.

Also, Syed is going to look into the option of renting a billboard, somewhere on a visible space. After that we had quite an interesting talk on where India is heading and such. Send me an email for info on that, or try to be there next time :)

Next meeting will be next week. Same Place, same time. Good night Guys.

PROTO

India, as a nation, walks the critical times in attaining the maturity of the entrepreneurial culture that is required to dramatically sustain its growing economy. A team of young and vibrant Entrepreneurs, technologists and passionate VCs are bringing together an not-for-profit event that they hope will spur the momentum in this space.

Proto.in is an event that is going to be happening in Chennai sometime in the next three months (dates are yet to be fixed), which hopes to bridge the gaps behind the entrepreneurs, VCs and the Technologists, in helping them to connect, share their passions, resonate with the ideas and get feedbacks on the next big thing to come. It is a showcase for financially-strained startups and companies entering the product space to attract mindshare, talent, and the attention of the industry, which will help them grant a better chance in succeeding.
