Music then and now !

March 31, 2007 Leave a comment

This was the debut album where i took notice of this singer and the crooning was so spellbinding , For the last couple of years no longer is music what it used to be in the early years, If you have the lyrics all done well then 75% of the job is done . Aligning to this idea you got to listen to Norah Jones here. Then you are reminded of seeing the same as visuals in the Maid in Manhattan where Jlo plays the maid with the background crooning of the same lyrics.

Here is her latest bestseller

Here is another video that most of us with flair and liking to Indi pop might prefer to listen to … Here you find the strains of sufism here and there mixed with the old melody on a totally new packaged offering from Karunesh.

Session 3 was on Prevalence of Broadband and its penetration in india and how wifi and wimax can be great enablers to achieve the same presented by Sloka. On the break i met Ramesh babu of Austal Group who was very interested to participate and contribute in The SHOOT , a photography evnt by TKF due to be held in May 2007. Session 4 was on Hadoop Map-reduce avery interesting concepth that i might blog technically in a separate post.Post lunch on the strategies to be followed on PROTO and the willingness of the bangalore team to collaborate ob PROTO SE. It was decided that the Third edition of Proto due on 21st Jan 2008 will be held in Bangalore. Good day Folks!

Post lunch on the Internet Room

Web 2.0 as blogging platform presented by Bforblogs.com looks like a polished version of Pro blogger with better aggregation to be done in it. Then there was a session on Intelligent Social Networks (Socionets) are the buzz of the future. Pls check www.thumbstacks.com to know more on the collaborative spirit of Socionets. There was a session spearheaded by Kiruba and Me (Syed) on the UNBOOK project. We took the initiative to create and rally for authoring to churn content and buzz on "the unconference book" We suceeded in creating visibility for the project among the BCB3 participants. There were professionals like Raj Datta (GM of Knowledge Management) from Mindtree and Payal of OSC who have expressed great interest to take up initiatives with the Knowledge Foundation on this project. This is just the fraction of the share of people who met our other friends from TKF. The day was great and look forward to a equally exciting networking dinner tonight and an interesting day ahead.

Monsoon is not so Soon !

March 29, 2007 Leave a comment

With the sweltering heat of the summer amidst us most of the IT community takes cover on the safe haven of their plush air conditioned offices and once in a while in between meetings we end up on the roads commuting from one place to another … and there you see some strong overpowering images that really take you to thinking … Once such image and one such moment came in my recent travel as well. Al Gore talks about global warming , greenhouse gases and so on but as responsible citizens what intiatives are we taking on this regard. A week back i was talking to my friend Ravi who is building an interesting proposal of deriving alternate fuel (Biodiesel) from Jathropha. We were basically on discussion about the ways to empower rural india and in the process make it a profitable venture as well. Bridging rural divide is a very macro issue that needs to be viewed beyond cost / benefit ratios and profitablity. We are looking forward to interesting parties who are ready to join hands with us on this social venture .

Indian Cricket team – Great Home coming!

March 24, 2007 Leave a comment

Absolute Sitting ducks ! What was supposed to have been a stroll in the park has turned to be the worst nightmare for the Indian cricket team. With the gloomy news of Woolmer’s murder sitting heavy on the world cup proceedings the media is going very light on the team.We cannot discount the fact that such a dismal performance was never before seen in a world cup from India. This is the very team on whom India Inc spends more that 100 Crores in the way of sponsorhip, brand endorsements and appearances. I wouldnt be surprised if the sensex on the large caps take a dip on monday. Such a perilous performance and the overplayed media hype around the team that it will bring the cup back pls guys wake up to reality, this indian team is like a pack of sitting ducks on dark pond waiting to be hunted down. Minnows are roaring and the diseased and old lion is yet to wakeup. This team is good to play in doctored indian pitches and fixed foreign grounds. I hardly write about cricket but to see that corporate india is wasting so much on such a bunch of jokers makes my blood boil. Anyway happy homecoming ! At least now all these companies will realise their mistakes.

BCB3 and my experiences with BCB2 !

March 24, 2007 1 comment

Barcamp Bangalore has always been a very pleasant experience for me One of the core reasons being that I am a visitor to the Bangalore and most of the purpose of me going there will be to get together for a learning and contributing ideas as such. My focus is more on the content and to derive value for that secondly it serves as a totally new pitch where we meet a lot of new people apart from the core team of Barcamp Bangalore (who btw are a set of amazing individuals) . My previous experience with Barcamp Bangalore was at 2006 when the second edition was held at Yahoo Labs. I have very pleasant memories of that camp. There was a large overdose of ROR, Pinko marketing and Taazza but it was scrum that really captured my attention and over the following weeks we at Fuente and Mecosoft developed this into a practice for smaller web based projects and today its one of the landmark standards that we established in 2006.

BCB3 I am sure will spark more such ideas into my mind. This time I will be there with an expectation as well as representing the brand of The knowledge Foundation as we want to spread the idea and the concept of knowledge sharing movement among the youth in India.

Favorite music and videos of 2006

March 23, 2007 Leave a comment

This song by James Blunt is an awesome tearjerker ballad from " Back to bedlam " album ! 2006 debut with this album has taken James blunt to places. Here is a trivia about him. The videos for all of Blunt’s singles to date feature symbolism and dark imagery. In the first video for "High", he is buried in a desert. In the first video for "Wisemen", he is kidnapped and taken hostage. In the video for "You’re Beautiful", he alludes to suicide by jumping off a cliff into the sea. The re-release video for "High" then features Blunt running in a forest. The re-release video for "Wisemen" has Blunt burning identification papers, and then walking through a forest while he is on fire. And in "Goodbye My Lover" he is singing while clips of a man and woman (played by Matt Dallas of "Kyle XY" and Mischa Barton of "The O.C.") kissing and cuddling are flashed up every few seconds. Enjoy it !

Out of my Mind by same artist is also pretty cool!

This song Buttons by Pussy cat dolls with feat Snoop Dogg is one of the catchy numbers that is my favorite among the current girl bands. This song has a strong sexual undertone, where the ladyt, who is described as a sexually attractive individual, teases her intended male subject to help her take her clothes off (hence the main chorus line "I’m telling you to loosen up my buttons") The video of this racy number is also cool. The Pussycat Dolls collaborated with Snoop Dogg. The song was altered slightly from the album version, adding in two rap verses. For the final release of the single, the version featuring Snoop Dogg is titled as the Main Mix, though most people considered it the remix. Enjoy it !

Among the recent IPO’s there has been a very subdued response to such companies from the market. The market however had responded positively to stocks like Global Broadcast Network and Mindtree technologies. Buth the new kid on the block that has appreciable value is ICRA. ICRA was established in 1991 as a credit rating agency by a consortium of financial/ investment institutions, commercial banks and financial services companies.

This is the premier firm that is engaged in the business of providing rating services. Basically the services provided for corporates include (i) consulting services, (ii) information technology based services, (iii) information services, and (iv) outsourcing services.Best in its Class When it comes to Credit rating, ICRA is the second largest company next only to Crisil. The firm commends strong market position for credit ratings in the financial sector and structured finance. The company boasts of Rich database and research support for its products and services portfolio. This is a very attractive buy in the IPO market.  ICRA is promoted chiefly by the  Moody’s Group .

Compactness of the form size will be the basic direction where the future of RFID will basically be. Lower unit cost and increase in reading capability and transmission distance will be a direction that this technology will head towards.

March 21, 2007 Leave a comment

Here is a demonstration of the RFID application on railways and its capabilty has been captured very well here. The bandwith of this opportunity, its utilisation on logistics and movement of goods is enormous. With the current Indian Budget the government has increased thrust on railways as a profit earning arm and more emphasis on logistics and related sectors, its time to start looking at applications that create value for the end customers. This application is currently being tested in the Euro rail network.

Sensex and Nifty at current levels – A reality Check ( **** On popular demand )

March 18, 2007 Leave a comment

This was a post long overdue that I was supposed to make sometime back but again for the umpteen time I would blame it on the schedule of my work. Blogging requires a disciplined effort and to maintain the same has been a real challenge for me in the last few months.Any way this weekend couple of my friends came out with some observations and said that I need to blog about my second passion: Stock market and Investment! Now that the last couple of weeks market has been like a roller coaster ride with no predicted behavior. The market has bee bottoming out so mercilessly with every week being a nasty bloodbath on the trading floor.  So here I am doing that . This post is chiefly after many friends from the knowledge foundation nudged me to chip in my views on the TKF meeting held earlier today.  Before I talk about the Stock market we need to talk about the factors that has been chiefly responsible for the current trend in the market.

Inflation and pulse of the Indian Economy: Inflation in Indian environments is at an all time high. Partly this inflation seems to be due to unequal balance of trade and due to the various payments and the slowly progressive shift of the GDP thrust towards the Services sector from the traditional sectors like agriculture.

Budget 2007: For the last couple of years the Indian budget has become a non event with all reforms moving on predictable directions with no eventful subsidies or sudden taxation on the public. This time again there were so many areas where the India Inc was expecting the finance minister to announce relief and subsidies like on the Individual Income bracket and so on. Just by raising the slab by 10000 has made no visible difference at all to the salaried individual. This created a sort of disappointment among the masses. Announcing subsidies on pet food, later products and related sector has been such a let down. From the corporate point of view MAT (Minimum alternate tax) and continuance of the fringe benefit tax and increase of the tax net to include ESOP on FBT have all added to the damage. But at the same time increasing cess by 1% to create a prudent reserve  to fund for secondary education and more outlay for agriculture and agri based projects has been a great boost on the long run for the economy whose effects we will definitely find at a long term.

Global Markets: Weakening of the Yen due to increase of the interest rates by the bank of Japan in the recent times has overheated the Nikkei Index. This has led to the cascading effect felt at the HanSeng, Kospi, Mesdaq and this has finally had its effect in Russian and Indian market as well.

Sensex and Nifty at Current levels: Sensex and the Nifty have been on a bull ride for a very long time as per the complaints of many a financial experts. This has really overheated the markets and this has led to the index taking a correction and in response to this correction a lot of FDI and FII have been withdrawn from the Indian market over a period of the last few weeks amounting to more than $40 million. All these investors have evened out their position and have gone for greener economies like Brazil and China. This week will be similar to the last few weeks with rocky atmosphere. Market will continue to be ruled by the bear hug for next few days as most futures are expiring and the up trend will start from the second or third week of April conventionally. But with this kind of market breadth you never know where it will end.

Large caps, mid caps and Small caps: All three categories of stock immaterial have suffered a great deal of damage in the market. One of the major market movers like reliance has actually been a laggard in the market along with major IT stocks also taking the beating. Communication stocks like RELCOM have taken major blows. Mahindra and Mahindra has also been performing badly. After the news surrounding Vodafone Essar, companies like Bharti have announced aggressive plans to take the competition by the horns but this has not brought the anticipated positive trends owing to the market slump. Sun TV has also been suffering badly until news like the successful launch of Insat 4 B have brought some life in this stock as this company is planning DTH services in a big way in south India and in Insat 4 B it has booked some major space to take off this service. At current levels excellent picks will be Reliance, bharti, suntv at every new lows with  wait watch approach for Mahindra and Mahindra and Sesa Goa.

Infrastructure stocks like Atlanta limited, Parsvanath builders, Unitech, Action Construction, Sobha developers and Lanco Infratech have taken a severe beating in this down trend. The downtrend is so bad that the SEBI is trying to find new valuation methods to keep check on these companies financial ratios.  However in this space companies like GMR Infrastructure have been performing well.

Among the IPO’s post budget the only scrip that has been an out performer is Mindtree Technologies. Predictions about the high value of this stock and my recommendations for the investor can be found on this post

written 4 months back. This seems to be the only stock that has performed exceedingly well. At the current levels the stock looks very much overweight and so recommend investors to be cautious to take any long positions. Another Stock that has performed reasonably well is GBN – Global broadcasting network (CNN-IBN) . At current levels excellent picks will be Page industries, First Source Solutions (formerly ICICI Once Source), Indian bank and Mudra life style.

Lets wait and watch this week folks. Good night and good luck!.
