Virginia Technology on campus shooting - A disaster waiting to happen !

Posted by orione on April 18, 2007

On Saturday a couple of us gathered together online to discuss about the slew of isolated events (Shooting) happening worldwide and related to the same we decide that lets touch base with its relvance to incidents in the past like Columbine high and so on. Following the incident at Virginia Tech. there has been an incident in the Johnson Space center at Florida and over the weekend there was an isolated incident at Hyderabad where a student gunned down one of his classmates.

Is this proving to be a trend? Are we undergoing a lot of stress at our place of study or work.? What has been the role place of the media in our current happenings. We thought that we will take up this topic and do a discussion on the related factors. Joining me on this discussion is  Payal Shah, an organizational Psychologist. As soon as i heard of the VT incident i was very much reminded of Columbine high and infact pinged the same to Payal. And to hear that for the killer Cho those guys were a sort of inspiration came as no surprise.Behavioral analysis depicts that the major stimuli to a persons behavior is from the information and events that happen around a person and how it affects the person or how insulated the person is from such stimulus.

I am reminded of Zig Ziglar quoting" What we put in is what we will get out ! " If we put in violent images and violence into the minds of people what else can we expect to take out other than violence " Today’s greatest influence for human mind is the media ( both visual and print media ). And the kind of content that is majorly predominant in media is war, bombings, terror and violence. The greatest war machine that is ravaging the Middle east is the War against terror that is being solemnised by the Big brother (USA). Look at Africa and the greatest excuse is ethnic cleansing that is happening in a big manner with thousands being killed everyday. Conflict between Israel and lebanon is a 40 yr old affair. Payal provides some interesting insight into the dynamics of the media functioning on the principle of FUD- Fear , Uncertainity and doubt. And these 24 hr channels seem to barrage us with such images constantly thereby numbing us.The discussion went on to us agreeing that Indian youth are not yet so deeply affected or distorted that such incidents will not be a common occurence. But late that night we heard of a Shooting incident in an engineering college at Hyderabad.

These are some observations from Payal on the Psychology
There is ample research showing that increase in exposure to TV violence increases violence in real life, especially in children and teenagers. More importantly, there is the widespread phenomenon of desensitization where people that are exposed to so much violence get desensitized by it – what seemed aggressive and violent before, doesn’t bring about the same emotional response from us now. This can also contribute to a higher threshold of tolerance towards violence, especially in people who have deficient emotional and insufficient conscience development genetically.

Also, there is what is called a cycle of violence, which means that those who have been exposed to or experienced violence as kids are more likely to be violent when they are older. To that effect, the average American child is exposed to 13,000 violent deaths (not just violence) on TV betweent the ages of 5 to 15. The number would have increased considerably now. (Feldman, 2004) 8,000 tv murders by the time they are in elementary school. 82% of all programs broadcast contain violence. 32 violent acts per hour. (Berk, 2001). Highly aggressive children have greater appetite for violent TV. The more they watch the more they are likely to resort to violent and hostile methods of problem solving. This spirals into pattern of learning that contributes to serious anti social behavior by adolescents and young adulthood. This also leads to a skewed view of social reality in that heavy viewers of violent tv are more likely to believe that there is much more violence and danger in society (Gerbner etc al, 1979, Singer et al, 1984). The effects of violent video games are similar to those of violent TV programmes.

In today’s world with respect to media do not believe what you see in print, or what you hear on TV. Nowadays TV sensationalises acts at times inciting negative imprints on the human mind.

What we took out of this entire session is that even normal people undergo phases where you tend to succumb to mental pressures like burnouts so on. But what we feel is common is Love never fails ! Tell that to your friends, your children that you love them. Spread love and cherish such good feelings and i am sure you will make a difference. What has happened is past but we can do a lot about the future.

(After this interesting session that spanned for 30 minutes online , we identified the need to address this space of mental health as a dedicated blog where we will take up the issues related to a persons well being one topic after another. People who are interested to join this debate can join in online at 1700 hrs Friday and the topic is " Youth violence " Joining us in this space will be  Subha J Rao, a reporter from the Hindu - Coimbatore and Senthilkumar a sociologist and a founder of a school for the mentally challenged. )

Followup: After 10 days of publishing this post

There has been so many phone calls appreciating the content of this post and so on . Last weekend on the RTFF (Rooftop Film Festival) nandhu proposed a movie to be screened first called " Elephant

Absolutely amazing !, maybe he took the cue out of this post to throw more light on the shooting incident and the peer pressure at the colleges of today .

Knowledge Management Initiatives by corporates in the Indian Inc. space

Posted by orione on April 17, 2007

Knowledge management seems to be the new Fad among corporates in India Inc. and this post is basically to break the myth around it and also to throw light on what is Knowledge management all about and its role in corporates today. This post is also after the culmination of the discussion i had with Mr. Raj Datta , head of  Knowledge management at Mindtree Technologies, Bangalore and Kiruba

India is hailed to be one of the fastest growing economies of the third world and one of the key driver of this economy is the strides that we have taken on the technology space and in IT  development. So at the outset Indian economy can be more aptly termed as the Knowledge Economy. Globally there is a shift of markets are revolving around such Knowledge economies as the world of tomorrow is all about the power of knowledge. Knowledge to collaborate and contribute and technology acts as a big enabler for such knowledge management Initiatives.

" Give a man fish and feed him for a day, teach him to fish - you feed him for life ". Knowledge acquired has to be shared otherwise its pointless and death of that knowledge. And corporates have been pools of such knowledge and talent. Knowledge management in Corporates is the capacity of an organization to adopt and exploit technology, information to create innovation and productivity. It is the ability of the organization to translate information into knowledge. Knowledge management is also about accrual of collective information, standards maintained and practices followed as a common pool. This effects better decision making process. Its a team process and involves contribution and participation from one and all.

Knowledge Management Initiatives at Fuente and similar corporates: Corporate Blogging has been one of the initatives to manage KM process in Fuente . Disemmination of knowledge and sharing of knowledge across the company is possible in a very democratic manner using the vehicle of blogs. This allows individuals to contribute towards finetuning the kowledge storage by adding their experiences and lessons learnt on particular processes.

Webforums: This is another popular knowledge management initiative among technical groups. By creating web forums and forming special interest groups around specific funtionalities like Quality management, Testing intiatives and programming groups, forums help in free participation of individuals across heirarchy and across geographical locations. Online forums help in free exchange of messages of common interest

WebPortal: Portals help in Corporate branding serves as a starting point or gateway for all knowledge management initiatives like corporate learning and teaching needs for employees. Creating a pool of developmental tools that can be kept as viable access to all the employees alike.Creating high utility value to the same by integrating informations systems like Project tracking tool, HRIS so on.

End of the day the success of any knowledge management initiative lies in its capablity to address the following 3 questions

1. How relevant is Knowledge management to what i do ?

2. What are the inputs expected of me in my capacity?

3. What is in it for me to gain?

Knowledge Management is a very good practice when it come to enriching the organizational resources. It is one of the means of corporate self sustained growth that all leaders should focus on to practice, We should think of small initiatives, set doable target that evoke the interest of the employees without overburdening their workload. We need to identify champions in our organization who can spear head such initiatives who can communicate and set realistic expectations. End of the day we should communicate the true meaning of knowledge management as a holistic approach towards managing the organizational greatest resource: The human mind ! Good Day Folks !

NarayanaMurthy : Indian President for these times !

Posted by orione on April 9, 2007

Mr. Narayanamurthy for the post of President of India ! Suddenly one of my teenage fantasy seems to be coming true. Back in college i was a great fan of Jeffery Archer and the character of Florentyna kane is so overpowering that it remains iconisied in your imagination. Today there is a possibility to see that in reality here in our electoral process. Why not ? Now that India Inc has been surging forward with is global acquisitions and mergers happening here, we need vibrant visionary self made leaders to take the nation ahead . The world is watching India as the most emerging economy of this decade.

For the last 4 years India is shining ! With our current President Kalam lending so much credibility to the Indian subcontinent in the global arena we are seen and respected as a country to be taken seriously in terms of technological advancements and our Space initiatives. He is known for delivering his ideas on presentations among global leaders he meets and a stickler to time management in his video conferences with his subordinates and other civil servants. Leaders who met him were intimidated by his knowledge and greatly humbled by his approach.A definite favorite among children, students, youth and the poor masses of our nation, he will remain to be one of the all time popular presidents of our time to have so much credible air to the post that anyone in our times has done. But it seems the democractic process has taken its toll on him and he has his apprehensions when it comes to continuing for the second term. In Indian democracy as we all are aware the presidents role is very much limited and it has its own limitations. Political parties in the past have been using the post for appointing people who are yes men to the ruling parties this has been a reason for dissent of many presidents in the past . Such expectation of the ruling parties dont augur well for likes of people like our current president.

In a President representing india in the global stage all we need is a visionary who has been there and done that, a practical hands on man who has done it before and who can carry forward his people management skills to a bigger platform.  If an individual  can create a 1 lakh, Crore brand called Infosys from just $ 250 and if such a person sits at helm of affairs, we can see a great step ahead. Yesterday when Mr. Kalam expressed his comments at Infosys Mysore it has opened new possibilities in our political arena. And to be vouched by no other than the current president Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam is a great recommendation by itself. Is it a symbol of trend to follow in these times? To carry forward the good work of President Kalam now that he is not ready to continue another term i think that there is no better choice than Mr. Narayanamurthy. Lets set aside religion politics, caste politics and look forward for an entrepruneur as the President of India.

The blues that you should never miss !

Posted by orione on April 6, 2007

This song is called " The Moondance " by Michel Buble and the song is smooth you would love to waltz on !

Buble without " Fever " is unthinkable. In all aspects he is a variation of a Mordern day Elvis. The visuals of this video are recomended only for adults and under viewer discretion. (The song is on fever and if not hot what else can we expect?)

Kenny G ’s "Songbird" is a very slow one and stirring if you hum the lyrics alongwith the melody

Happy Weekend Folks!

Can Adobe’s FLEX 2.0 and AJAX be a powerful combination to RIA (Rich Internet Applications)

Posted by orione on April 4, 2007

At BCB3 the Big Fight was on Flex and Java as tools for RIA (Rich Internet Application). This debate attracted a lot of geeks to contribute and it turned out to be an interesting debate.

Flex has been a great tool for building rich internet applications. But somehow it seems to lack proper addressing in the interactivity nature of the front end and back end. Flex 2 brings the portability and features of Flash to enterprise client developers. Flex 2 is actually the third iteration of the Flex product line.Flex applications can also fully integrate with Ajax/DHTML via tight Javascript integration provided by the Flex-Ajax bridge.  Flex 1.0 was released in 2004 almost under the radar.Flex 2 uses an XML-based language, MXML, as its declarative language. MXML is very component based, but these components can be expanded and enhanced via ActionScript.Flex when combined with MXML and actionscripting can prove to be more powerful to fetch data from the backend. Flex will use the MVC framework at times and is also called as Cairngorm. Comparing Flex to java there seems to be a clear distinction between the presentation layer and the Business layer. Flex is all about building up RIA’s based on the Presentation layer and the Ajax is more focussed on the business layer

There have been concerns about the alternatives for Flex on the open source as Flex is an indegineous tool developed by the Adobe banner. Market comparisms have been happening around Windows presentation Framework and the Open Lazlo projects on parallel grounds to develop RIA’s. Open Laszlo formerly known as the Laszlo Presentation Server (LPS) is an open source software that has a very similar declarative model to Flex and also has a rich set of options for being hosted on the Web including the ability to support the Flash 6 player and above. The most compelling upcoming feature of Laszlo is the ability to generate Flash applications or Ajax applications from the same source code. Open source applications have always had limitations too like support for commercial usage and so on.

Talk about IT and if you are developing an application and if your competitor is not Microsoft then you are really missing the competition. So as always even in this front from Microsoft there has been some competition on tools to build RIA’s called Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). But comparing WPF and Flex 2 on common grounds is somewhat misleading as WPF will be used to create some amazing RIAs, it is primarily going to be used to build desktop applications that can be delivered over the internet.

Summarising my support on Flex let me tell you this , Flex is a very compelling technology. Eventhough the application is in its rudimentary stages in comparism there is a lot of development going into it to create robustness. Flex and Java integration will be a great tool for building RIA’s  This combination will be able to harness the power of rich user experience of Flex and the great interactivity of the Ajax framework. BCB3 had a common impression that Flex and Ajax don’t compete - but they do, and the sudden peak in demand of Ajax just replicates that people like building rich web applications. At some point, the best Ajax developers will hit a wall and have to find other ways to bring their visions to life. There have been developments on this direction as well from the Ruby on rails community called the Flex Ajax Bridge but that is a totally different topic altogether to dwell on later.

Cement Stocks may loose and Bhel will shine bright !

Posted by orione on April 3, 2007

BHEL has announced amazing results this evening and following that the stock is an out performer in the stock. BHEL is planning to spend 3200 Crore to increase its capacity, Plans on to enter Nuclear power plant set up in association with Allstom. Plans to generate 15000 MW power in the current fiscal. It is on tie up with Reliance on rigging operations. BHEL has an excess outstanding order to the value of Rs.55,000 Cr. and this fiscal it announced a 48% increase in its net profits. This is a stock to watch for now and a recommended buy as the stock shows a good one to hold on a medium to long term basis. The BHEL stock gained Rs. 100 today as the market reacted to the news

Cement Stocks are taking a great thrashing and the latest on this sector happens to be that the CVD has been removed from import of cement thus making the imported cement much cheaper and attractive than the local cement producers like ACC, Ultratech, Grasim, Ambuja, Dalmia so on . Analyst say that the cement that can thus be imported with these rates will be Rs. 30 cheaper than local cement. This move by the government follows as a result of steps to curb inflation rates in the economy. This is one of the list of steps taken by the government to keep check on the inflation as along steps like these….

  • Increase in CRR making the liquidity more dearer now.
  • Removal of quota on sugar exports thus boosting agriculture
  • Taking a tough stance on realty IPO’s and stocks to keep check on land prices

In the news from the auto stocks, Carlos Ghosn, CEO, Renault and Anand Mahindra, CEO, M&M unveiled the Logan at Rs. 4.8 lacs for the petrol version and the diesel version at Rs. 5.45lacs. Only time will tell if Logan is going to replicate the success that it has in the European markets again in India. M&M is currently quoting at the levels of Rs. 743 and the next few days can see if we are in for some good news in this stock. Initial bookings on the Logan to start in 2 weeks at 10 cities across India.

Hershey’s come visiting to India to take a 49% stake in Godrej foods and this will be a great step in the F&B segment. I will be writing more about this as the deal unfolds. As to my favorite sector IT tread with care as all these companies are due to announce their results in the course of this fortnight and there are so many factors that are of great concern. There has been a slowdown in the IT scenario in US market, companies in a bid to keep up the figures are making foray in newer markets like Europe, Scotland and south America. Secondly Rupee is very strong against the dollar so this might reflect unfavorably in the earnings. Two nights back in Bangalore I was exchanging notes with Raj Datta, GM of Knowledge initiatives of Mindtree quoting that Africa is one of the untapped markets where there is sizable potential for all these IT growth.

Investors beware the market has not bottomed out yet . What appears as a small comeback of 160 pts today is a small bounce back , but appearances can be so deceptive as I feel the bear hug is still gripping the market.

Stock market - Beware small time investors!

Posted by orione on April 3, 2007

Following the move of RBI that hiked the Cash Reserve Ratio by 50 bps to 6.50% (back in 2006 may RBI did a similar exercise and the market took a month to get back to those rates again)  and also the Repo Rate has been hiked from 7.50% to 7.75% . The response to this has been a sever bloodbath in the market witnessing a 600 point fall in the sensex and a 187 points fall in the nifty . Absolute bearish hug is ruling the market currently and it will take some time for the market forces to get out of this bearish grip. In terms of the magnitude of this down move of the markets this is the second biggest fall in absolute terms closing near the day’s low Realty stocks, auto stocks, and banking stocks have taken the major blow in this downfall. It is not a good sign for small time investors to hold the stocks rather can exit their positions now to take position much later at much lesser rates once the bottom out is over. Next 2 days is going to see a major loss in the small cap as well. To think that this is how we start a financial year gives a very negative breadth to the Indian economy. All this is leading to FII’s looking at Indian market as something that needs to be avoided for the moment so this might result in most of the FII’s deciding to pull out from the market resulting in a bearish hug getting a bigger grip on the market thus resulting in lower prices for a longer period. India Inc is already reeling under scarcity of money in the market due to following factors

  • Increase in CRR resulting in Higher PLR
  • Less money sources in market
  • Greater Taxes like MAT
  • Advance tax payments

Now these are market forces that are hear to stay and India Inc needs to figure out strategies to meet these challenges and workaround them. So for a few weeks stay away from the market guys and if you are fold wait for a few consecutive upwards moves before taking any position in the market.

Airbus with its golden geese on the air !

Posted by orione on April 1, 2007

This is not a bird, is not superman but the realistic marvel to hit our skies in 2007. Airbus Industris latest offering the A380 is sure an engineering marvel on the sky. This Jumbo jet looks so huge that you could hardly believe if such a behemoth can take of the ground with such relative ease as it does.

The A380 can hold a maximum capacity of 519 people and the plane weighs around 569 metric tons. Compared to the average jumbo jet, the A380 has clear strategic advantages like 30% less noise in the cabin and has 40% greater passenger capacity. It also consumes 20% less fuel. Here is the making of the A380 video from the National Geography and it looks amazing with a 9 minute behind the scenes footage from the hangar of the making of the jumbo A380.

A380 was showcase in major airshows in 2006 to gather orders from major airlines such that production can start on the same. Singapore airlines will be the first to fly A380 on air commercially, receiving their first of a 19 plane-order this October 2007. Other airlines include on the order list of the Airbus 380 are: Qantas, for 20; Air France, for 10; Virgin Atlantic, for 6; Thai Airways, for 6; and Korean Airlines, for 5. Emirates takes the cake for an order of 43. Rumours and unconfirmed sources reveal that Kingfisher airlines has made some order for the same too. But most planes won’t be delivered until 2009.

Are you Relocating your office ? What about connecting LAN by wireless ?

Posted by orione on April 1, 2007

Next month one of my friend is shifting his office to a new place from a set up where he has been functioning currently for the previous 5 years. Apart from all the logistic challenges one of the major bottlenecks that you find is on ramping up the infrastructure in time for the non stop functioning. That is where the concept of setting a LAN on Wireless will be of great help. Today Wireless LAN Security is at its best. You can protect your network with latest protocols and SSH levels. Recently i came across a site that provides a guide on How To Secure Your Wireless Network The site has been very informative on the detailing of the step by step process for harnessing your network to good speed. The site goes about explaining the same in graphics and is a must see for those who are ready to set a wireless network.

For those interested to take in to trivia Here is a chance to win the latest router from the blog.
